Who Goes Scare?

What are the scariest films you have seen?
Tracking down the most frightening horror film is not an easy task… The problem is that everyone has their own idea of what is ‘scary’. For example, there are oodles of movie fans that say ‘The Exorcist’ is absolutely terrifying. I sat and watched a dodgy copy of it with a friend when I was about fourteen. At the time it was still banned and we expected it to scare us both silly.
Scare; no.
Silly; yes.
I can remember being extremely disappointed after watching it. My friend found it so frightening that he went to sleep half-way through it…
For me, a genuinely scary film is something that plays back in your mind when it is dark. When I think of scary stuff from movies I remember scenes from films like; ‘The Grudge’, ‘The Ring’ (the original Japanese versions), ‘Paranormal Activity’ and ‘The Blair Witch Project’.
Sometimes it can just be the imagery of a certain scene that creeps you out. One of the photographs on the videotape in ‘The Ring’ is of a guy with a cloth over his head, pointing at something. I don’t know why, but this really gave me the willies. Or there is the bit in ‘The Shining’ where the Jack Nicholson’s wife has a look to see what he has been so busy writing…
‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.’
Why do I find that so disturbing?
The bottom line is that we are all affected by different things in different ways. What one of us thinks is stupid can really frighten someone else.
Scary moments in Horror films are not dependent on blood and gore; if they are able to tap into certain areas of our sub-consciousness’ then we will feel very unsettled indeed.
So, as you all should know, it is my birthday coming up and in case you are curious as to what to buy me (that means you Grena) I have been thinking a lot about that dvd set for House, just in case you couldn’t think of anything..
