A Ray Of Sunshine.

A Ray Of Sunshine.

When I sat down and watched, ‘Sunshine’ I had no idea just how good it was going to be. I missed the beginning, so I was completely unaware (until the closing credits) that it was made by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland. Because ’28 Days Later’ was such a damned good film I would have expected them to make a good job of a sci-fi story. However, they did an even better job than I expected!

I have always been a big fan of Science Fiction, especially films like ‘Blade Runner’, ‘Silent Running’, ‘Alien’, ‘2001’ and ‘Event Horizon’. When I was watching ‘Sunshine’ I could clearly see elements of most of these in parts of it. The photography was superb and very reminiscent of Kubrick’s ‘2001’ and the darker sequences of the film were extremely ‘Alien’ and ‘The Cube’.

‘Sunshine’ has some stunning special effects but it manages to use them without turning them into the star of the movie. Many modern Science Fiction films are merely a vehicle to showcase the latest CGIs and everything else becomes secondary.

It was a wonderful surprise to come across ‘Sunshine’ purely by accident as there are very few intelligent Sci-Fi films around these days. It may not have the Hollywood icons in it but it also does without their hum-drum boredom.

Whatever it is that Danny Boyle and Alex Garland go on to do next, I shall be watching with keen interest. They are, without doubt, two of the finest filmmakers that we have. Films like ’28 Days Later’ and ‘Sunshine’ offer a sanctuary to people who are sick of being bombarded with ridiculously scripted and over-hyped movies such as ‘Independence Day’ and ‘War of The Worlds’.

I couldn’t sleep a wink last night and decided to go skulking round the world wide web for something to keep me busy, turns out the Heroes Forum is not only a brilliant way to waste time but also fairly entertaining
